Yavapai-Apache Nation for Life

In 1875, People of The Yavapai-Apache Nation were forcibly marched 180 miles through mountains, across several streams. Over 100 of ancestors died during the journey.

Exodus Day on Feb. 28th is a yearly commemorative event of the Yavapai–Apache Nation in Arizona that honors shared history, remembers the journey of YAN’s ancestors back home to Camp Verde, and brings the community together in strength and unity. The event includes a morning ceremony, the commemorative Exodus Run from San Carlos to Camp Verde, a commemoration march, and a community gathering with food, vendors, and cultural performances.

Working with YAN Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program, we researched and created outreach materials that highlight, honor the beautiful culture of strength, resilience. Our staff researched the history of YAN:

  • World-renowned basketry used for patterns
  • People of the Sun origin story
  • Crown Dancer
  • Rainbow Dancer
  • Drum Style + Headwear

We sketched, drew by hand from photos of Tribal members and YAN history for all the artwork.
